As I'm sure you know by now, Qui Nguyen won the WSOP Main Event... and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. It was certainly one of the most exciting performances I've ever seen at the WSOP.
And I think there's some important notes to take away from this win.
Qui Nguyen was not the most skilled guy at the table. But so many elements of his game lifted his performance and helped him trump better skilled poker players. I've been saying it for years, once you know the fundamentals of poker, there's so many things you can do to elevate your game that don't even involve studying hands or learning theory.
1. Table Image
Nobody brought better swagger to the table than Qui Nguyen and it lifted his mental state above everyone else.
Some people may try to deny that momentum is an actual thing that can influence poker, but it 100% changes the way people feel, act and their hand ranges. Just the same as tilt influences people's game.
3. Game Selection & Motivation
Qui Nguyen is not a world class tournament player (before today at least!). He's got nothing to prove to anyone but himself. He's fueled by the love of his friends and his family, and clearly confident to himself that he could win this title.
What are your thoughts? I'd love to hear what you thought of this year's WSOP final table. Next Twitch hangout we'll be sure to share some discussion.
Qui Nguyen, 2016 is YOUR year - congrats!
